“I’m Lydia, I’m 17 and I joined Inspire, Chorley Youth Zone for something to do. I was hanging out on the streets a lot, often just playing football. I’m a very energetic and sporty person, I was inspired to come to a session for the available sport in a safer environment. I feel more confident since coming to Inspire. Believe it or not, I used to be quite shy. Largely because of the support and guidance I get at the Youth Zone. I’ve made a lot of friends that have helped me feel more comfortable. It does help me practice my football skills and it does help me staying active and out of the house. It makes me use my energy in better ways.
I like going to different zones and trying things I’d never thought I’d be doing. I like that you can find skills in yourself you didn’t know you had or simply being able to try new things out. I started drumming, which I never thought would happen and I never would’ve had that opportunity without Music at Inspire Youth Zone. From that, I worked hard on projects like ‘Chorley Light Switch On’ in front of crowds! The staff are really helpful and understanding. They never make it boring.
It’s made me deal with situations in better ways. I’m calmer and happier when attending the Youth Zone because I know there’s support there if I need it. I’m getting additional mental health support that was recommended and signposted to by the Youth Zone. Fundamentally, I get to focus on football with talented youth workers and can keep regularly engaged in a whole range of activities.”
