Manchester is leading the way with second Youth Zone

16th March 2018 by OnSide

Media Release

The new Youth Zone is to be built in East Manchester on the former Gorton baths site at the corner of Hyde Road and Queensland Road and will enable thousands more young people to be inspired at the Youth Zone, with 20 activities a night and open 7 days a week and 52 weeks per year. The Youth Zone is expected to attract 3,000 young people in its first year; and will create 50 jobs within the Youth Zone. It will provide a platform from which other organisations can reach more young people, and local people wishing to get involved can enjoy volunteering at the Youth Zone.

Manchester Youth Zone – East will add to the youth provision across Manchester, which includes the excellent Factory Youth Zone in Harpurhey. The new Youth Zone and The Factory will work together for the benefit of young people across the North and East of Manchester and together will continue to develop partnerships with all other organisations that support young Mancunians.

Manchester Youth Zone – East, will be applying for planning consent later this year and is scheduled to open early in 2020.

Chris Davis, Chair at the Factory Youth Zone, said “the new Manchester Youth Zone – East is a fantastic opportunity to enhance the offer to young people, building on the experience of the team at The Factory. With the support of the Manchester business community, we will be working together to provide the best possible opportunities for our young people; they deserve nothing less”.

Executive member for schools, culture and leisure, at Manchester City Council, Councillor Luthfur Rahman, said: “the new Youth Zone will inspire young people and provide a state of the art facility with quality recreational facilities and lots of opportunities for personal development, seven days a week”.

Kathryn Morley, Chief Executive of OnSide Youth Zones, said “having two Youth Zones in Manchester more than doubles the ways in which we can help young people, we will have the scale and scope to provide a much more encompassing offer. We are very much looking forward to delivering something on a comprehensive scale that Manchester can be very proud of”.
