Meet Alex, Volunteer at The Hive, Wirral Youth Zone

4th June 2025 by Onside Youth Zones 3 min

As part of Volunteers’ Week, we’re shining a light on some of the incredible people who give their time to support young people across the OnSide Youth Zones network.

This week, we caught up with Alex, a long-time member and now volunteer at The Hive, Wirral Youth Zone, to hear about her journey from being one of the very first young people involved in shaping the Youth Zone as a member of the Young People’s Development Group, to now giving back as a passionate volunteer.

Alex, can you tell us a bit about yourself and what inspired you to start volunteering at The Hive Youth Zone?

I’m 26 now, but I’ve actually been involved with The Hive for 10 years since before the building even existed! I was part of the Young People’s Development Group that helped shape it from the ground up. Then I became a member and saw first-hand the difference the team made and still make for young people. I went through a lot as a teenager, and the support I got from the team was absolutely incredible. I’m so grateful for them to this day. That’s what inspires me to give back now. I want to make the same kind of difference for someone else.

“The Hive is a place that will always be part of my life. I know how much of a difference can be made in that building.”Alex, Volunteer at The Hive

That’s such a full-circle story. How did you first get involved in the Youth Development Group?

I was using local council youth services at the time, and someone came in with a big display board about this brand-new youth zone opening up. They asked if anyone wanted to get involved. Honestly, back then I wasn’t someone who would volunteer for something like that I’d have been too nervous. But for some reason, I said yes. And it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

What does The Hive mean to you now?

It’s a place that will always be part of my life. I don’t think I could ever fully walk away. I know just how big of a difference can be made in that building. The Hive gives young people a safe space a break from the pressure of school or challenges at home and the chance to just be themselves. That’s so important, and it’s something I’ll always believe in.

What would you say to someone who’s thinking about volunteering at The Hive or any other Youth Zone?

Go for it, 100%. Even if you think you can only commit a couple of hours every now and then, it still makes a huge difference. Don’t let that hold you back. Just reach out, have a conversation, and see what’s possible. You won’t regret it.

If you could run a session on anything, serious or silly, what would it be?

I’ve actually done this before, but I’d love to do it again: a Disney takeover! It was ages ago when I was a young person, but I’d love to bring it back with all the new films that have come out since. Also… I’m a bit of a JLS fan — although that’s a running joke in the youth zone. So maybe a music-themed session with different rooms for different artists or genres. That would be fun!
