Wirral Youth Zone hits 3000 members!

3rd May 2017 by OnSide

Wirral’s landmark £6m facility, The Hive Youth Zone has been open less than a month and has already hit the 3,000 members mark!

The Youth Zone, located on Bright Street in Birkenhead, opened its doors for the first time on Saturday April 8th marking the day with its 1000 member, Rosie Lovett named as the lucky member who also played a part in naming Wirral Youth Zone, ‘The Hive’ back in 2014.

Since then, a staggering 2,000 more young people have joined Rosie as members and in the process, has smashed the first year membership target, after just three and a half weeks of opening.

Membership costs just £5 a year with young people then paying 50p per visit. Young people can sign up online by visiting: www.thehiveyouthzone.org/new-member.

The Hive offers up to 20 activities per night; from a 4G football pitch, four court sports hall, iconic climbing wall, fully fitted gym, skate park, music room, media room, arts and crafts areas, dance studio and even a boxing gym and recording studio.

Youth Zone Chief Executive Stuart Barnes said: “To reach 3,000 members so soon after opening is mind-blowing. The team here at The Hive have worked tremendously hard to offer the best service for Wirral’s young people and the membership numbers is now reflecting that. I would like to pay a huge thanks to everyone who has made this possible and a big thank you to Wirral’s young people for trusting us. Without young people, The Hive could not function.”

The Hive costs £1million per year to run and is funded through a combination of public sector and private sector funding. 50% of the running costs has virtually been secured through the local business community: Urenco UK, Boulting Group, The Contact Company, Selwyn-Lloyd Charitable Trust, John Syvret CBE, The Bibby Family, Cammell Laird, Edward Billington & Son Ltd, Anne Duchess of Westminster’s Charity, B&M Waste Services, Andrew Collinge Hairdressing, Park Group, West Wallasey Car Hire, the Barton Family, Progress to Excellence, Russell Taylor Group as well as anonymous supporters.

Volunteers will also be crucial in its success. The Hive has recruited 100 dedicated members of the community to make sure they deliver the best service for Wirral’s young people.

Wirral Youth Zone is an independent charity which will operate to the successful OnSide Youth Zones model. For more information or to sign up as a member visit www.thehiveyouthzone.org.
