Wirral Youth Zone Opens With 1000 Members!

10th April 2017 by Onside Youth Zones

The Hive Youth Zone, our ninth facility in the Network, opened its doors to Wirral’s young people on Saturday with over 1,000 members now signed up.

A special opening celebration was held with everyone from the borough invited to look at the world class facilities on offer on Bright Street in Birkenhead.

A samba band welcomed young people and their parents as they waited in the sunshine for the doors to open at 1pm before they headed inside for an afternoon packed with activities.

The Hive’s Chairman and Cammell Laird’s Chief Executive John Syvret CBE was joined by representatives from each of the key partners in the project – Wirral Council Leader Cllr Phil Davies, young people and the first volunteer – to perform the official ribbon cutting and officially hand over the £6million facility to the young people of Wirral.

Leader of Wirral Council, Councillor Phil Davies said: “The Hive Youth Zone is a clear commitment from the whole community that we believe in the potential of young people in Wirral and will look to do all we can to support the skills and aspirations of future generations. Despite a challenging funding climate, investing now will reduce the need for more re-active and costly interventions further down the line. It also illustrates our ambitious plans for the borough, with the recently launched Wirral Growth Company designed to encourage further development in the area.”

The membership number hit the 1,000 mark just moments before the big opening with Rosie Lovett named as the lucky member. It was fitting that Rosie, aged 14, played a part in naming Wirral Youth Zone, ‘The Hive’ back in 2014.
