Youth Zone helps Paniz gain Lords experience

13th July 2017 by OnSide

A member of the Barnet (Unitas) Youth Zone Development Group enjoyed a somewhat prestigious work placement – at the House of Lords!

Paniz Nobahari, pictured on the far right of the photo above during a recent visit to the House, spent time shadowing Lord Jon Mendelsohn, who is also a Unitas board member. While there she helped with research as well as assisting with a number of other projects.

The link up came about when Paniz attended a fund-raising dinner for Unitas in the Home Room of the House of Lords, where she spoke with Lord Mendelsohn about having an opportunity to spend some time there.

The 16-year-old Wren Academy student was delighted when he organised the work placement and she says it was a very worthwhile experience.

She said: “Other than being treated to afternoon teas, a lovely lunch and a tour, I was given research tasks and the opportunity to submit questions to the government based on body image and the beauty industry. I wish to pursue a career in politics and this has not only equipped me with great memories and experience but also opened a path to new contacts that will be helpful to me in my future.”

Paniz  believes thanked OnSide and Unitas for helping to facilitate the work placement and believes it’s a great example of the Youth Zone network providing amazing opportunities for young people, which they wouldn’t necessarily have to chance to fulfil.

She added: “Coming from a disadvantaged background, having the opportunity to access a well respected institute was helpful in slicing through feelings of disillusion and motivating my career choice. Lord Mendelsohn listened to my background story and encouraged my decisions. This was a lovely experience which would not have been possible without Unitas!”

Paniz clearly made an impact during her time at the House of Lords and came away with a glowing report…

Lord Mendelsohn said: “Paniz was a pleasure to work with and showed tremendous work ethic and commitment to whatever task was put in front of her. She was an absolute credit to Unitas and to the Youth Zone network, showing how much young people in this country have to offer. I hope she gained a lot from her experience and that it helps her in what I’m sure will be a very bright future.”
