Why Manchester?

The ward in which Manchester Youth Zone is located ranks 2nd worst in England for the effect of long-term deprivation on children. Many young people in the surrounding area are vulnerable to poor educational attainment, future worklessness and to developing antisocial or offending behaviour.

In the local area:

  • Unemployment is 16.2% (national rate 7.5%)
  • 48% of families live below the poverty line
  • 11% of 16-18 year olds are not in employment, education or training

What Manchester Youth Zone is all about...

This infrastructure of facilities is based upon our 21st Century Youth Facility Model and young people from across Manchester will have access to all these fantastic facilities for a cost of £5 for an annual membership and 50p per visit.  The Youth Zone will provide a safe environment where young people can come and enjoy themselves and will enable young people to raise their aspirations and confidence, to create a happier and healthier generation.

“I would recommend Junior Choices to other people so it could change their life the way it changed mine.”

Meet Shaun – when he was younger he would hang out with older kids who would force him to do things which led to him being threatened with exclusion from school. Shaun was referred to Manchester Youth Zones Junior Choices – a 10-week intervention programme – where he has built up his confidence and learnt to enjoy meeting and helping new friends.
