OnSide Youth Zones starts with the principle that every young person is different with different strengths, aspirations and needs.
Our Youth Zones have benefited from the ‘A Level Playing Field’ project funding which was provided by the ‘Big Lottery’ and ‘St James’s Place Foundation’.
From 2014-2016, during the three year funded project, we created ‘A Level Playing Field’ for ALL young people and we firmly believe that #everyyoungpersoncan.
During an inclusive sports event, the abilities of a child or young person are included in the planning to ensure #everyyoungpersoncan. Sports are adapted for every ability, there is a structure to the day, competition is removed so the focus is placed on taking part, having friends and making fun.
I never used to go out, but now I have so much confidence and independence
Each of our Youth Zone’s has support staff who receive a comprehensive training package to ensure they can support any needs a child has to ensure they can take part in the wide offer available at the Youth Zone.
Our approach to including and integrating children and young people who have a disability is ‘person-centred’ and is unique to every person. We accept the difference in a positive way and communicate that through our values, training and expectations in the behaviour of members that attend every session at the Youth Zone.
Our aim is to include every child and young person whatever their abilities. Each Youth Zone has developed inclusive sports events which run during school holidays, please do contact your local Youth Zone for further information on the next event.
The A Level Playing Field project came to an end in December 2016 and we wanted to highlight the instrumental impact it has had across the three years at our Youth Zones. This success will enable Youth Zone’s to carry on with their inclusion work for years to come.
The project was rolled out across the OnSide Youth Zone Network, with CADs events organised within each Youth Zone over the year. A Level Playing Field was made possible through the generous financial support of £1,173,451 from the Big Lottery Fund and £154,000 from the St James’s Place Foundation.
That is the strapline message from ‘Seashell Trust’ popular award-winning inclusive sports events. At OnSide Youth Zone and through the ‘A Level Playing Field’ project funding our Youth Zones have developed the ‘CADS’ (Children’s, Able and Disabled Sports) concept into our school holiday provision.
There are holiday activities and events taking place every school holiday at all of our open Youth Zones which are based in Bolton, Manchester, Oldham, Wigan, Blackburn and Carlisle and more recently now open in Wolverhampton.
We understand and have feedback from parents/carers that the need for quality respite services for children / young people with a disability during school holidays is essential.
The ‘A Level Playing Field’ project has provided funding and training and with partnership support from the ‘Seashell Trust’ enabled the OnSide network of Youth Zones to deliver CADS in every Youth Zone who benefitted from the funding.
