Our Approach

The project, which aims to reduce the need to refer young people with lower level health related needs, will be carried out across the OnSide Youth Zone network at the following Youth Zones: Oldham, Wigan, Manchester, Carlisle, Bolton, Wolverhampton and Blackburn.

Starting with a Health Assessment Survey conducted last year across 8 Youth Zones, the project saw young people answer questions relating to different aspects of their health. The findings were used by each Youth Zone to identify the main health priorities for their young people with a number of pilot projects set up across the Youth Zone network.

How does it work?

The next two years of the project will see Youth Zones continue to deliver workshops covering a range of key areas including:

  • 5 Ways To Wellbeing – focusing on Mental Health
  • Fab 5 – focusing on Obesity
  • Self Harm
  • Unplanned Pregnancy
  • Nutrition
  • Oral Health
  • Substance Misuse
  • Alcohol
  • Sexual Health
  • Physical inactivity


5 Ways to Wellbeing

​​​​​​​Twelve months into the project and young people are already seeing the benefits of exploring health and wellbeing topics. Mahdlo Youth Zone in Oldham, delivered ‘Lean for 17’ which saw a group of young people explore healthy eating and exercise. The group particularly enjoyed the introduction to circuit training with members now requesting weekly circuit sessions at their Youth Zone.

Our Junior members were invited to take part in a five week course to learn more about wellbeing.
